Agawa Bay – Lake Superior Provincial Park

Agawa Bay – Lake Superior Provincial Park

From Sudbury, we headed west and hugged the coast along the North Channel, past Sault Ste. Marie and then up to Lake Superior Provincial Park.  The shorter trees of Sudbury made way for tall pines again as they lined the hills on either side of the highway.

Campground

We stayed at Agawa Campground in Lake Superior.  Couldn’t be easier to find. It was right on the TransCanada Hwy but also made for a bit of noise from the highway traffic. All concerns were eased when we arrived at our campsite.

View from Agawa Bay site 100

Could you ask for a better view just feet from your site?  Electrical site 100 was unfortunately across from the vault toilets which meant a bit of noise from people coming and going but luckily there was no odour to contend with on our site.  Next time, I’d suggest site 103.  Still lakefront and farther from the vaults.  Comfort stations were just a short walk away so it suited us just perfectly. Oddly site 100 had the fire pit located close to the next site and away from the flat spot for tent or camper.

A little hiccup

After setup (still at 40 minutes) was complete it was time to get cracking..… dinner needed to be made and quick… so on goes the induction burner and zap!…. The entire campground’s power goes out. We didn’t realize this and spent the next 20 minutes fiddling with fuses, breakers, plugs… you name it, we checked it…  We gave up and yanked out the propane bbq and dinner was back on. A short trip to the park office and we found out the entire campground was out due to a blown transformer on the highway.

Dinner made, I decided to have a beach picnic which was only steps away.

dinner on beach

Kids couldn’t have asked for a better beach, more rocks than the kids could ask for, nice sand further back.. and a view us adults could just sit back and marvel at…

agawa sunset

We sat until sunset.. which wasn’t that long of a wait. It seems that summer hours have descended on this family. Since we started the vacation we have ate late… which led to having the kids up late. The land of the midnight sun allows us to forget the time and we’ve been eating later than normal and heading to bed later than normal. I’ll save some face and not admit to how late… But calm quiet campground, nice crackling fire and happy kids and family. That’s a memory to savour.

Observations:

  • Wild turkeys on the side of the road
  • Mustard fields adding a nice touch of sunshine to the panaroma
  • Mennonite farmers reminding us how beautiful simplicity can be.

Kid’s memories: ‘I can throw the rocks the farthest’. I loved the beach!
