TFC…and some exercise on the way
With tickets in hand for the only afternoon TFC game this spring, we spontaneously decided a bike ride to get to BMO Field was a great idea. Water bottles and snacks packed, we headed out with about just over 2 hours to spare to get from midtown Toronto down to BMO field.
The Route
We started on side streets and passed through Sunnybrook Park and ET Seton Park and connected up with the Lower Don River Trail. The only problem? The river trail was closed beyond Pottery Rd! A quick check with Google Maps and we re-routed along the Bayview extension path. Not highly recommended if you need to get past Rosedale Valley Rd as the only option for a tiny stretch was to actually ride on the road. Lucky for us, the road was not busy at all and we made it with no danger. We connected back up with the Martin Goodman Trail which runs along Harbourfront and is a great trail. It is separated from the road and the path is wide and clearly marked.
A quick stop for a pic with the CN tower and we were in the home stretch! BMO field finally came into sight! Surprisingly, the kids were in great spirits! (OK the promise of a treat at the game helped with motivation in the last stretch!) So we made it in just over 2 hours! We made it into the stadium with time to spare to grab a bite and get settled to watch the game begin.
The Game
TFC vs the Minnesota United May 13, 2017 Final score 3-2… for the TFC! woohoo!
All in all, we survived the 22 km ride from home to BMO field. OK… so it really helped that a lot of the ride is downhill… but I’m incredibly proud that my 6 yr old made it all the way on his own steam and my 4 yr old was smiles the whole way on her bike while attached to dad’s bike.
Needless to say, with 22km under our belt and a high energy 3 hour TFC game (have you ever witnessed watching the fan zone of a TFC game?.. it’s entertainment on it’s own!) we rode our bikes to St. Andrew Station and hitched a ride on the TTC subway. Phew… fun but long day!
